Description
A classic example of American Impressionism titled "Portrait of Durand-Ruel" by Theordore Earl Butler. Signed by the artist and dated 1910 on the bottom left. Original gallery tags from The Union League Club (New York, NY) and R.H. Love Galleries Inc. (Chicago, IL) on verso. The painting was exhibited at the show titled "Theadore Earl Butler: Emergence from Monet's Shadow" at The Union League Club in New York, April 1 --; April 28, 1996, and R. H. Love Galleries Inc. in Chicago, June 15 --; July 6, 1996. A pamphlet from this exhibition is on the verso. A lovely and tranquil "en plein air" Impressionist portrait with the subject reading in a lush garden scene. The painting transports the viewer to the turn of the 20th century when observing the fashion of the man, yet the painterly style is classic and timeless. Dimensions: 37.75"h x 32"w x 3.5"d (framed). In good vintage condition consistent with age, the surface shows fine craquelure throughout. Provenance: From a private estate, who purchased the painting from R.H. Love Gallery, and the current owner inherited the painting from their family. This painting does not have supplementary authentication paperwork but has been reviewed by Art Certification Experts Inc., December 2023. They provided an extensive report, and their final opinion is there is insufficient evidence to make a positive attribution to Butler. An accredited appraiser also reviewed the painting and considered it to be authentic, but with the lack of provenance provided we cannot confirm authenticity, which is reflected in the reserve pricing. Theordore Butler (1861-1936) as an American impressionist painter. He was born in Columbus, Ohio, and moved to Paris to study art. He befriended Claude Monet in Giverny, and married his stepdaughter, Suzanne Hoschede. Butler was a founding member of the Society of Independent Artists. Butler's chosen subjects were domestic scenes of family and friends and the French landscape. Although his Impressionistic approach to painting sometimes reflected the influence of his father-in-law, his work also suggests Post-Impressionist tendencies. Butler exhibited extensively throughout his career, and this continued with posthumous exhibitions. Today, his art can be found in private and public institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
