Glazed modernist stoneware vase by American studio ceramist, Dennis Kirchmann (1939-2017). Slab-built, high-fired and decorated with the glazed image of a tree or plant using the wax-resist painting technique.

Signed on the bottom, inscribed into the clay, "KIRCHMANN". Circa 1970's.

NOTES / REFERENCES: Dennis Kirchmann was born in 1939 in Fremont, Nebraska.He served in the United States Navy from 1957-1960 then earned his B.A. degree from Hastings College, where he was named Outstanding Art Student for 1969, an M.A. from Fort Hays Kansas State College in 1970 and an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa in 1972. During the 1970s he was an Instructor of Art at the University of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Art Center.

A well-known Indiana ceramic artist, Kirchmann actively participated in solo and group exhibitions throughout the Midwest and remains in the permanent collections of the Hewitt Association, the University of Iowa, the Evansville Museum of Arts and Science, and the Art Association of Richmond. He approached his work from both sculptural and functional standpoints and with production as his primary focus, he ensured a use to each decorative piece that he constructed.

Dennis Kirchmann died in 2017 at the age of 78. His ceramic works are in many important collections.
