By Nagigawa Tesso (active early to mid-20th century), signed Fukujuanshu Tesso and with a kao
Japan, Nara, early 20th century
Of muso-zutsu type, carved in shishiaibori (sunken relief) to one side with Okame wearing a finely incised robe, depicted in a dancing posture while holding an open fan aloft. A seated figure before her, seen only from the back, gazes at her with the head slightly raised. All with details embellished by subtle pigments, the cord attachment in the form of an eyelet near the rim. Signed to the other side FUKUJUANSHU TESSO with a kao.
Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear and shallow scratches.
Provenance: Private collection. Purchased from Nelly Davies, London, 2006, previously Edward Wrangham Collection of Japanese Art, no.2250.
Dimensions: Length 21.5 cm
Nagigawa Tesso was a student of Kano Tessai and made several works in his master's style. His dates are unknown, but he is recorded to have been still living in 1936.
