Description
This constellation engraving is from Jakob van Gheyn's Arataea sive signa coelestia after the work of the ancient astrological pet Aratus (315-240 BCE). This first edition of the work was published in Amsterdam by Joannes Jansson in 1621. This atlas was modeled after Hugo Grotius's publication in 1600 entitled Syntagma Arateorum.
Jakob van Gheyn (1596-1641) was a Dutch painter and engraver. He studied in Haarlem under Hendrik Golzius. His illustrations for this work were based upon early editions of Hyginus and other astrological texts. They are considered "perhaps the finest illustrations of the individual Hyginus constellations." (Warner, The Sky Explored, 93)
Paper Size ~ 8" by 12"
