The sale of this lot is final. Was a British-Mexican Surrealist painter and a founding member of the women liberation movement in Mexico. Enigmatic and full of obtuse symbolism, her Self-Portrait (c. 1937-1938), depicts the artist in a domestic interior, extending an open hand to a female hyena. You may not believe in magic but something very strange is happening at this very moment, she once incanted. Your head has dissolved into thin air and I can see the rhododendrons through your stomach. Born on April 6, 1917 in Clayton Green, United Kingdom, she grew up on an estate surrounded by animals and nature. Though deterred by her parents, Carrington was granted permission to study art in Florence where she was enriched by the architecture and art of the Renaissance. Returning to England, she attended the Chelsea School of Art and saw the 1936 exhibition of the Surrealists held in London. Drawn into the Surrealist milieu she met and began a romantic relationship with the older German painter Max Ernst, whom she later painted a portrait of. Ernst was a notable influence on Carrington work. After Ernst was arrested for degenerate art, by the Nazis in France, he fled to the United States and abandoned Carrington in Europe. Deeply depressed after the relationship ended, the artist was hospitalized after suffering a mental breakdown in Madrid. Treated with shock therapy, Carrington emigrated to Mexico in 1942 to escape the war and resumed painting. The only woman included in a major retrospective of Surrealism at the Pierre Matisse gallery in New York in 1947, Carrington became an overnight sensation. Over the rest of her career, the artist lived and worked between Mexico City and New York. She died on May 25, 2011 at the age of 94 in Mexico City, Mexico. Today, the artists works are included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Tate Gallery in London, among others.
