"Three Years of Arctic Service" Inscribed and Inspiring to Admiral Richard E. Byrd

Volume I: Large octavo, xxv, 428pp. Inscribed on the front pastedown, "To Admiral Richard E. Byrd and the members of his 1933 Antarctic Expedition with the compliments of E. Griffith Dodson 10/19/33." Also stamped "Library of R.S. Dodson." Both volumes are bound in navy cloth, with gilt and silver titling and illustration on the cover and spine. Cracked spine hinges. Slightly cocked text blocks. Light toning and foxing throughout internal pages. Bumped, worn corners and spine edges. The loose map has some separations at the folds. Boldly signed inscription. Overall very good.

The volume has numerous illustrations and maps throughout along with 17 plates and one fold-out map. Volume II: Large octavo, xii, 444pp including an Appendix and Index. With numerous illustrations and maps throughout along with 26 plates, a fold-out sketch, a fold-out map, and a large folded map within a pocket folder at the back of the book.

Edward Griffith Dodson (1884-1969) was a Virginian Democratic politician and member of the Byrd Organization. He was a member of the Democratic State Central Committee from 1916 to 1938, and served as campaign manager in Norfolk for Harry F. Byrd in his successful run for Governor against G. Walter Mapp in 1925. Henry F. Byrd's younger brother was Richard E. Byrd (1888-1957). The younger Byrd was naval officer and explorer who claimed to be the first to reach the North and South Poles by air. He conducted his second Antarctic expedition during the winter of 1933-1934 and may have been inspired by Dodson's gift.
