Anthony Frederick Sarg (1880-1942), known as "America's Puppet Master", was raised in Germany and lived in the U.K. before moving to the United States to pursue a relationship with American tourist Bertha E. McGowan. Sarg had been raised with puppets, as his grandmother has a large collection that she later gifted to him, and he started using them in films in 1921. He helped build tethered, helium-filled balloons for the Macy's department store which would later feature in the Thanksgiving Day parade. And in 1935, his puppet designs were used in Macy's elaborate window displays during Thanksgiving and Christmas. When Sang finally took a step back from puppetry, he pursued a career in illustration for magazines, children's books, and toys.
