Description
Rare silver inlaid bone marrow or snuff scoop. Dated July 21, 1823 and with inlaid silver hearts and initials "MAS". Made of carved bone and decorated with an inset glass cabochon or moonstone and primitive folk art designs of hearts, leaves and Pennsylvania Dutch style bird. The best and most ornate example of this type of early tool that we have seen. Likely a presentation piece, but is well-used.
Length: 4 5/8" (12 cm)
CONDITION: Good condition with wear and old patina
PROVENANCE: Private collector.
NOTES / REFERENCES: Often called marrow scoops, these little bone spoons were actually multi purpose ... used for extracting bone marrow, measuring snuff, medicinal ingredients or even just coring fruit.
