Description
Original painting by well-listed Seminole / Muscogee artist from Oklahoma, Enoch Kelly Haney (1940-2022).

Gouache on Crescent board. Matted and framed (no glass).

Signed in green paint, lower right: Enoch Kelly Haney. Undated, circa 1988.

Untitled on the work but depicts a ceremonial peyote vision of a Plains Indian rising from the camp fire along with birds. Original paintings by this artist are rare.

Painting (sight): 14" x 28" (35.5 cm x 71 cm)

Frame: 22" x 35 1/2" (56 cm x 90 cm)

PROVENANCE: Santa Barbara, California estate.

CONDITION: Painting in perfect condition with no damage or restoration. Double matte in perfect condition. Silver-leaf wood frame with wear and scratches. No glass presently in place.

NOTES / REFERENCES: Enoch Kelly Haney (1940 - 2022) An American politician and internationally recognized Seminole / Muscogee artist from Oklahoma. He served as principal chief of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma from 2005 until 2009 and previously served as a member of both houses of the Oklahoma Legislature. He created a bronze statue, The Guardian, that sits atop the Oklahoma State Capitol.

Enoch Kelly Haney was born in 1940, in Seminole, Oklahoma. His father was a flute maker and craftsman and his paternal grandfather, Willie Haney, contributed to the Smithsonian Institution's oral history project and served as Chief of the Seminole Tribe in the 1940s. Haney painted in oil, acrylic, and watercolor and drew with pastels, as well as sculpting with bronze. He exhibited throughout the United States, as well as Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and Switzerland. The Five Civilized Tribes Museum declared him a Master Artist in 1976.
