A Chinese bronze lion-form censer
18th century or earlier
A robust lion seated on its hind legs with flame details to the legs, face, and tail; head removable from body. Interior of head with previous collector sticker, and with previous Christie's auction tag.
H: 13 1/2, W: 9 1/2, D: 14 3/4 in.

This bronze incense burner features a muscular and lifelike beast raised on four sturdy legs, which roars with bared teeth and glaring eyes. A single bell rests against its broad chest. Removing the detachable head reveals its hollow belly which can be filled with powdered incense. When burning, smoke gracefully plumes from the beast's mouth, adding to the lively appearance of this clever and well-crafted work of art. Condition
Small area of loss with crack to rim of neck. Age and use wear including minor abrasions and chipping.
