Description: American Early 19c Child Folk Art Standing Portrait Itinerant TC Armstrong Sitter Oil Painting. No visible signature, mid 20c label on mid 20c replacement stretchers identifying sitter as T.C. Armstrong, son of Mr & Mrs John Armstrong. Our firm sold portraits of T.C. Armstrongs parents, Mr & Mrs John Armstrong, in our September 30, 2023 auction. This has the same Provenance: Descended in the Colonel Walter Gresham, W.T. and Josephine Armstrong, Esther Gresham Armstrong of Gaslveston Gresham Palace Bishops Palace fame to Tampa Bay heirs, names withheld. The portraits from our Septum sale were also re-stretched decades ago. The Armstrongs are tied y the family to the Williamsburg, Virginia area at this 2nd quarter 19c time by the family there was an attribution of the parents to Ralph Earl however this could be another painter such as one in the manner of Ammi Phillips, Susan Waters or William Matthew Prior, etc.

Condition:Canvas has been consolidated but doesnt appear lined, has multiple in-painting conservations and has craquelure, replacement stretchers, dirty and darkened, has a vertical tear with tape canvas verso, stretchers not secured to frame completely
