Gordon Parks (1912–2006) was an influential American photographer, filmmaker, writer, and composer. Born on November 30, 1912, in Fort Scott, Kansas, Parks became known for his powerful and socially engaged work, addressing issues such as poverty, race, and civil rights. He played a crucial role in breaking down racial barriers in the arts and media.Parks began his career as a self-taught photographer and gained widespread recognition for his photo essays published in Life magazine, notably the series on the life of a Harlem gang leader titled "The Harlem Gang Leader" (1948). He was the first African American staff photographer for Life magazine, paving the way for future generations of Black photographers.In addition to his groundbreaking photography, Parks was a successful filmmaker. He directed the film adaptation of his autobiographical novel, "The Learning Tree" (1969), becoming the first African American to direct a major Hollywood production. He also directed the classic blaxploitation film "Shaft" (1971), making him a trailblazer in both photography and filmmaking.Gordon Parks used his art as a means of social commentary, shedding light on issues of racial injustice and inequality.
