Kasamatsu Shiro - Nikko Bridge In Rain. Japanese woodblock print.
The first edition of this design was published in 1942. The current print was printed between 1946 and 1957.
Size of the image (excluding margins) in centimeters 24.5 x 36.7 (9.7 x 14.5 inches).
The print is in good state. There is some mild soiling in the margins and two pinholes and two remnants of a previous mounting on the back. The colors have been kept very well.Shiro Kasamatsu (1898-1881) studied arts under Kaburagi Kiyokata. He designed his first woodblock prints for Watanabe Shozaburo in 1919, after the publisher had seen his work at an exhibition. He designed shin-hanga prints for Watanabe for a long period, and gained fame with his romantic landscapesand depictions of the traditional Japanese life. Between 1952 and 1960 he also created over 100 woodblock print designs for the Kyoto publisher Unsodo. Shiro Kasamatsu is generally regarded as one of the top shin-hanga woodblock print artists in Japan.
