Description
Alma Thomas (1891–1978) was an African American abstract painter and educator. She was born in Columbus, Georgia, and later moved to Washington, D.C. Thomas is celebrated for her vibrant, colorful abstract paintings, and she holds the distinction of being the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City in 1972.Alma Thomas began her career as an art teacher, and it was only in her 60s that she gained widespread recognition as an artist. Her works often feature rhythmic patterns of small, bright brushstrokes, creating lively and visually dynamic compositions. Thomas drew inspiration from a variety of sources, including nature, music, and her observations of the world around her. Some of her notable works include pieces like "Watusi (Hard Edge)" and "Resurrection." Thomas's art is associated with the Washington Color School, a group of abstract artists in Washington, D.C., who were known for their innovative use of color and form. Her contributions to the world of abstract art and her breaking of racial and gender barriers have solidified her place in art history.
