Gerardo Garcia (Mexican, b.1970). A large ceramic sculpture hand painted in the traditional Talavera style with a seated skeleton lady with a unibrow - unmistakably a representation of the artist Frida Khalo (1907 to 1954). She is seated on a chair with her pet spider monkeys and macaws. The skull and birds are separate pieces that are removable and attached via metal rods. The underside of the seat is signed by the ceramicist, Gerardo Garcia. This sculpture is inspired by the self-portraits Khalo painted- she often included her beloved pets, for example: "Self Portrait with Monkeys" (1943) and "Me and My Parrot" (1941). Size: 22" L x 17" W x 43" H (55.9 cm x 43.2 cm x 109.2 cm)
According to Centro Cultural Afirme: "Gerardo Garcia (Santander, 1970) has been alternating intense teaching work with exhibition activity since the 90s. Trained in the creative ceramics workshops of Raimundo Cubero and Miguel Gonzalez, he graduated from the School of Applied Arts and Artistic Crafts, with a specialty in artistic ceramics in Granada. Furthermore, in his professional career, he has taken numerous training courses and his teaching experience includes ceramics courses at the University as a lecturer and professor of ceramics in various cultural centers in Madrid and at the Tagore Children's School. Among the awards it brings together, the 14th 'Villa de Mostoles' Ceramics and Sculpture Contest, the 'Fundacion Vipren' in Chiclana (Cadiz) and the 'Unicaja Plastic Arts Contest' in M?laga stand out. Currently, his intense activity stands out in the Ceramic School that bears his name and is located on Cisneros Street in Santander."
