Description
American (Ohio), 2nd quarter 19th Century, cherry. Probably Matthew Patton, Montgomery County, figured cherry with poplar secondary. Paneled ends, inverted beehive turned legs, two bonnet drawer with two small center drawers over two drawers. All six drawers are dovetailed with applied beaded edges. Refinished and blown glass knobs have some chips, one is replaced and some edge loss to beading. 27.25"h. 27.5"w. 12.25"d. Stamped "J.C. Athey, Jan 22. 29" as well as "1802" with partial penciled notation "Came (from?) J. Mathey (?) Possession Jan. 8th 1897 bequested by (?) Hardman". Late note states it belonged to Enon, Ohio Civil War veteran Peter N. Hardman. Pictured in "Ohio Furniture Makers" vol. 1 by Jane Sikes Hageman, pg. 59.
