  • Provenance: Cotton 1930's cups quilt, all machine pieced and hand quilted, made with many feed sack and shirting fabrics. There is grid quilting throughout at 6-7 stitches to the inch. The back and hand stitched, rolled binding are the same raspberry floral print and the batting is thin. Made by Ellie Mae Lawerence (15 March 1908 - 15 December 1968), a domestic worker of Todd (Ashe County), North Carolina. Her husband Coy (Carl H.) Lawerence, owned or worked at a sawmill. Her parents were George Washington Maine and Meadie Potter Maine. George Maine was nearly always referred to by his nickname "General." Quilt was purchased from a collector who bought the quilt from the maker's son.
