Description
[GILLETTE, William, 1853-1937, possible association]. Gillette Razor Set Box, Engraved “To Sherlock Holmes / With Deepest Gratitude”. [Boston: Gillette, ca. 1900s]. Small brass box with hinged lid with inset purple (semi-precious?) stone on lid, with the above inscription. Approximately 4 x 1 ¾ x ½”. With original clasp. Inside of lid is lined in dark purple with a cloth Gillette label, lower portion of box is unlined (some wear, light scuffing, inside of lower box is tarnished and soiled). This rare and unusual item was purchased by Mr. Hess from a dealer in Colorado, who had originally purchased it from a collector in Kansas. Although there is no definitive provenance, Mr. Hess has entertained the possibility that this unusual item was a gift to the legendary actor, William Gillette, whose stage play, Sherlock Holmes (1899) created a lasting influence on several later portrayals of the famous detective. William Gillette is thought to be distantly related to the Gillette Razor family.
