Description
GEISEL, Theodor (“Dr. Seuss”) (1904-1991), contributor. Jack-o-Lantern. Dartmouth, 1919-1922. 27 bound issues in 3 volumes, 4to. Numerous illustrations by Seuss throughout (signed in the plate as “Ted Geisel” and “Ted G”). 2 volumes in half morocco (extremities sunned and rubbed), the other volume in buckram; all original wrappers bound in. While a student Dartmouth (1921-25), he was Editor-in-Chief, writing and drawing cartoons for the College’s humor magazine, The Jack o’ Lantern. Geisel invented the pseudonym “Seuss” after he was removed from its editorship for hosting an unauthorized party. He still contributed to the magazine but signed his middle name, Seuss, instead. CONTAINS GEISEL’S FIRST PUBLISHED ILLUSTRATION, POEM, AND ILLUSTRATED POEM. The full-page illustrated poem titled “Jazz” is apparently undocumented in Seuss literature and appears here for the first and evidently the only time.
