Item Details
Description
Lot not subject to reservation, liquidation of important inheritance (Spanish private collection). Good general condition, minor wear and chromatic loss. Measurements: 24 x 23 x 8 cm. Characteristic ceramics from Tlaxcala and Puebla, in Mexico. It is considered that authentic Talavera only comes from those states, specifically from the towns of Puebla de Zaragoza, Atlixco, Cholula and in the state of Tlaxcala in the municipality of San Pablo del Monte due to the quality of the clays found there. the tradition of its manufacture, which dates back to the 16th century. The colors used in its decoration are blue, yellow, black, green, orange and mauve (pale violet). Talavera production in these states reached great development thanks to the availability of its clay and the great demand for tiles to cover churches and convents. The industry grew to such a degree that by the mid-17th century it had created its own guilds of craftsmen and standards, which demanded greater quality, leading these states to their "golden age" between the 17th and 18th centuries. The tradition made its way through the War of Independence to the 19th century, during which the number of factories did not add up to more than eight in the entire state of Puebla. Later efforts by artists and collectors at the beginning of the 20th century tried to rescue the tradition and today there are talavera collections in Puebla, Mexico City and even in New York. Further efforts to preserve and promote the craftsmanship have occurred at the end of the 20th century, with the introduction of new decorative designs and the so-called designation of origin to protect the authenticity of Talavera pieces made with the original 16th century methods. Lot not subject to reserve, property of a collector, liquidation of important inheritance, Spanish private collection.
