A late Art Deco period, Chinese Exports gold leaf and black lacquer room divider folding screen. Exceptional detail throughout this vintage six panels Asian chinoiserie folding highly decorative biombo divider. Front of the panels features a landscape that is inspired by the recreational ponds and pavilions of the Imperial Summer City in Nanjing, all of it drawn with sparkling colors on a gold leaf background. Back side of the panels is black lacquer with a rocky garden inhabited by pheasant birds. The pheasant is a symbol of ill omen and is believed to turn into an oyster or a snake during the winter months. It is connected to seduction and extra-marital affairs.
