Item Details

Description

Full plate (whole plate) ambrotypes (glass photos) are extremely rare. They were expensive at the time, and the size lent itself to easy breakage. Drop a full plate ambrotype and it will break.
This giant of an image shows a handsome Union Army officer in the Civil War in the uniform of a Lieutenant or Captain. I believe the straps are those of Second Lieutenant. He is armed with a high grade cavalry officer-s saber with fancy scabbard mounts and a bullion sword knot. He wears both shoulder straps and epaulets on his shoulders. The photo was likely made in 1861 or 1862. This originally came from a family named Goshorn.
Condition is very good. There is an age spot on the mustache. It is housed in a mat frame and glass. No case..
