Description

1986 Unimog DOKA 406.145 Chassis no. WDB4061451W128899 • One of the last 5 delivered • Just over than 70,000 km • Thoroughly restored • Fitted with a torque converter clutch * Please note that this car will be available for viewing by prior appointment in Germany. In a post-War Germany, the need to kick-start the economy had never been felt more acutely. Former head of aircraft-engine design at Daimler-Benz, Albert Friedrich, was the first to create a vehicle capable of taking on the myriad of agricultural and infrastructure jobs needed to rebuild his country. His machine would prove to be precisely what was needed to get Germany back on its feet. He called his new tractor/truck the 'Universal-Motor-Gerät' (Unimog for short) and it featured four equal-sized wheels (unlike a conventional tractor), a high ground clearance, coil-spring suspension and power take-offs. In addition to agricultural uses, the Unimog proved to be as universally capable as its name implied. Soon it found fans among Germany's firefighters, forestry organisations, municipal authorities and even its military. In Germany and around the world. The Unimog's near unique mix of on-road manners (similar to a conventional medium truck), plus a rear wheel drive with pneumatically engagable four-wheel drive and three 100% lockable limited slip differentials, made it an easy vehicle to both live and work with. In addition to these talents, it can also claim to be the world's highest working land vehicle, after it climbed to a record height of 21,961 feet in 2020, ascending up the Ojos de Salado volcano in Chile. The vehicle offered here is an example of the 406 series, which was introduced in 1963 together with the long-wheelbase 416 and produced until 1988. It is a relatively rare 406.145 Doppel Kabine (dual cabin) model, 353 of which were built between 1974 and 1986. It has a short wheelbase, short axle ratio. The OM 353 engine with, a straight six with direct fuel injection, is supposed to power the vehicle to an 80 km/h final speed, according to the Navi. We believe this to be one of the last 5 delivered out of a total of 353 units built between 1974 and 1986. It was in service with the German Federal Armed Forces and put to work towing aircraft around a Spanish airfield. It was brought back to Germany and thoroughly restored by the current owner, with the extensive work including (but not limited to) new tyres, water pump, windshield, new platform, seals, door panels, soundproofing in the cabin and engine bay, cavity wax treatment, new paint and, just two years ago, new discs, pads and hoses. The restoration was finished about 16 years ago, since when the Unimog was kept in a dry garage and only used in good weather. All necessary maintenance has been done (axle boots, torque tube gasket, gearbox gaskets, alternator). The brakes have been renewed about 5 years ago, since it has not participated at any more meetings. Therefore these parts have been used for less than 3,000 km. The brake discs and pads and brake lines have been replaced, the brake calipers partly renewed and with original repair sets overhauled (invoice from Daimler-Benz on file). A Webasto stationary heater, which also heats the cooling liquid, has also been fitted but is currently not working as it has never been used. Please note that as the vehicle has only been used sparingly the clutch is slightly sticky. The car can be used and as soon as the gearbox oil is warm it works better. The vehicle is registered as a LOF tractor with an H-license plate and comes with a Fahrzeugbrief, invoices, data card; a DIN A4 folder with TDV's is available. The last TÜV was 13 September 2023, at which time the odometer was showing 70,128km.
