Description
Winner shall receive the exact item shown here. EXTREMELY RARE PCGS SHIPWRECK CERTIFIED CURRENCY. On the dark night of July 25, 1956, maritime destiny had her way with the SS Andrea Doria off the coast of New York. Sailing from Genoa, Italy to New York, NY the 700-foot long, 30,000 ton SS Andrea Doria crashed into the Swedish passenger liner Stockholm and sunk off the coast of Nantucket in the most dramatic shipwreck disaster since the Titanic. 52 souls were lost and 1,600 rescued. In 1981, after years of life-threatening attempts to recover valuable items from the ship, a team recovered the Banco di Roma safe that had been submerged in the shipwreck for 25 years. It was believed the 650-pound safe contained First Class passengers's jewelry and other valuables. In 1984, the opening of the recovered safe was the most widely broadcast international event of it's kind. Well... the passenger's jewelry and other valuables apparently were removed by their owners prior to evacuation, but what was discovered were stacks of U.S. $1 Silver Certificates and 50, 100 and 1,000 Lire Italian bank notes. In 2006, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the ship's sinking, PCGS certified more than 3,600 recovered notes - 2,726 U.S. $1 Silver Certificates and 878 undated Banca d'Italia notes from the 1947 to 1951 series. WINNER SHALL RECEIVE ONE (1) SHIPWRECK CURRENCY GRADED BY PCGS IN SLAB, WITH CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY, AND S.S. ANDREA DORIA DVD SET SHOWN HERE.
