Description
North America, Green River Formation, Eocene Period, ca. 56 to 33 million years ago. A large, fossilized fish, Phareodus encaustus, in a stone matrix with great preservation to both bones and soft tissue. This was a prehistoric freshwater species that swam throughout North America, with relatives in Europe and Australia. The sharp teeth on this specimen are on full display; Phareodus had a carnivorous appetite for smaller fish species, like Knightia. This fossil is nicely centered in a rectangular stone slab and meticulously prepared for display. Size: 17" L x 0.75" W x 12.25" H (43.2 cm x 1.9 cm x 31.1 cm)

Condition
Professionally prepared and excavated. Stone slab is repaired with break line visible on verso corner, but nearly indiscernible on front. Does not affect fossil. Great condition with soft tissue and bone preservation.
