Description
A very fine antique possibly 19th century example of a classic Poto ceremonial sword with intact animal hide bundle on the handle,such weapons were believed to be imbued with supernatural powers by sacrificial articles bound into the fetish bundle above the grip, rarely do old examples still have the bundle in place as they were removed by earlier collectors as it did not suit their taste. Poto Dignitary or Ngombe peoples, DRC/ Congo, Africa. The Sword measures 24 x 4 inches. Provenance: Ex Zollman collection, Indiana, USA.
