Description
6" Atl Atl Weight found by Venn Keeling in Lake Co. California on or near Bartlet Mountain. Catalogued by Berkley University. This artifact is quite foreign to us here in the Midwest. It is squared up for approximately 4 inches from the base up to the tip and then rounded for approximately 1 1/2" at the tip. We have seen a few of the atl atl spikes from out west and it doesn't quite seem to be one of those. It may have been strapped to the end of an atl atl for the weight. It does however appear to have use wear on the tip so may have been used as a pressure flaker on obsidian points. Its material structure and size which fits nicely in hand looks like it would lend it to working good for that. You folks from out that way may have seen an artifact or two like this and are more than welcome to message us with more info if you have it to enlighten us. Material appears to be basalt or a material similar to it. Interesting artifact that makes you think.
