DESCRIPTION: Dresser by German artist and furniture designer Max Kuehne (1880-1968) carved from wood and crowned with an eye-catching black marble top. Front and drawers are decorated with ornately crafted and subtly toned carved floral designs. Signed at bottom right of body above back right leg.

Born in Halle, Germany, Kuehne came to the United States with his family in the 1890s. In 1907, he began formal art training under William Merritt Chase and Kenneth Hayes Miller at the New York School of Art; one year later, he enrolled in the National Academy of Design. Though known primarily as a painter, he had a successful career as a wood carver, making picture frames, furniture, screens and sculptures.
