Description
Young Deborah Jane Berkin must have been away at school and missing her dear friend Debby, in early spring (May Day) of 1778, when she stitched this charming sampler. One can imagine Deborah and Debby referring to themselves as two ladybugs, note the two little bugs.
“DEAR DEBBY/ I LOVE YOU SINCERELY/ MY HEART RETAINS A GRATEFUL SENSE/ OF YOUR PAST KINDNESS/ WHEN WILL THE HOURS OF OUR/ SEPARATION BE AT AN END/ PRESERVE IN YOUR BOSOM A REMEMBRANCE/ OF YOUR AFFECTIONATE/ DEBORAH JANE BERKIN/ BRISTOL/ MAY 1ST 1778"
This sampler must have caught the attention of the author Andrew W. Tuer in 1896 because it is now framed with comments about this sampler, that appears to be an excerpt from the 1896 book “ Tuer's- History of the Horn-Book volume 2 page 251" by Andrew W. Tuer.
Silk on Silk; 8 x 8 inches sight, 15 x 12 inches framed.
