Description
North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A beautiful lathe-turned bowl formed from the wood of the koa tree. The vessel exhibits a stepped footed base, a squat pedestal neck, a globular body, and a thin rim. An accompanying discoid lid has a stepped design similar to the foot as well as a thimble-shaped handle. The wood has been meticulously polished to a lustrous sheen. A painted Hawaiian coat of arms has been added to the exterior of the body at a later date. Size (with lid): 4" Diameter x 6.75" H (10.2 cm x 17.1 cm)
