Six Minton Secessionist Ceramic Items, England, early 20th century, all with ink stamp mark 'Mintons Ltd.,' ht. 4 1/4 to 6 in. Footnotes: Note: The career of multitalented artist and designer Leon-Victor Solon (1872-1957) spanned from the British Modern Style to American Art Deco. The son of Marc-Louis Solon, the porcelain artist known for his pate sur pate technique, Leon's career took off when 'The Studio' published his designs while still an art student. The younger Solon joined Minton in 1895 and later became art director of the firm. The original Secessionist designs were a collaboration between Solon and John Wadsworth. In the early 20th century, Solon emigrated to the US and worked as the art director of the American Encaustic Tiling Company, which would become the largest tile manufacturer in the world. Solon later championed 'Architectural Polychromy,' or the application of color as architectural decoration. Major projects included the coloring of many sculptural elements at Rockefeller Center and the pediment of the Philadelphia Art Museum.
