Description

[CIVIL WAR]. 2 sixth plate portraits of soldiers with IDs incl. Capt. W.G. Weed, 18th NY Infantry.

Sixth plate ambrotype portrait of a gentleman sporting a mustache and goatee. He appears to be in uniform, and wears an overcoat and leather gloves. (Very good clarity, light wear to edges of plate.) Housed in a full pressed paper case with a manuscript note enclosed identifying the subject as "William J. Weed, Frank Hammond W's father, Albany, NY Lawyer." William J. Weed enlisted on 4/19/1861 as a captain and he was commissioned into Co. I, 18th New York Infantry.Β He was out of service on 5/10/1861 (not mustered or commissioned).Β

[With:] Sixth plate tintype of a mustachioed soldier wearing, his cheeks lightly tinted pink and his buttons and "US" belt plate highlighted in gold. (Some light cracking to surface, wear to edges, focus a bit soft.) Housed in a full pressed paper case with later manuscript note enclosed, which reads, "Geo. W. Whitman's Army Picture, Civil War- 1861-1865." An additional modern note is enclosed indicating that the subject served with Company F, 17th Maine Infantry. However, there are several Geo W. Whitmans listed in HDS, making it impossible to say that this is definitely the one who served in the 17th Maine.

Together, 2 cased images of Civil War soldiers.Β
