Ivory Coast, Senufo Peoples, Carved Wood, Gourd, And Leather Harp (Korikaariye) Ca. Early 20th Century, H 6' Dia. 11" | Three stringed harp with a sounding chamber fashioned from a hollowed out gourd. a wooden rod extends from the top of instrument to support one end of the strings, while a wood bridge carved in the shape of a female figure anchors the strings at the other end. Korikaariyae were used by Senufo diviners belonging to the Sando association. the female bridge figure may refer to role and power of women within the divination society. Provenance: Property from a Bloomfield Township, MI private collection.
