Description
A vintage still from the silent film "The Son of the Sheik" (1926, directed by George Fitzmaurice and starring Rudolph Valentino and Vilma Banky). Ahmed, the son of an Arab sheik (Rudolph Valentino) stares at dancing girl Yasmin (Vilma Banky). Valentino wears an Arab-style headdress with an embroidered vest; Banky wears a harem-style outfit. Vintage silver photo print with some visible silvering, probably 1970s-80s.
The print is large; 10.1/2" x 14" [26.7cm x 35.6cm] including the blank margins which are 1/2"- 1/4"; the photo is attached to the heavier paper, some nice silvering: metallic mirroring at the corners and in the middle, very good condition.
'Silvering' on the photo, the silver oxidation of the silver-based emulsion is characterized by a yellowing and sometimes silver mirroring along the lines of contrast between high and low lighting and can appear partially or cover the whole image.
Rodolfo Alfonso Raffaello Pierre Filiberto Guglielmi di Valentina d'Antonguella (1895-1926), known professionally as Rudolph Valentino, was an Italian actor based in the United States who performed in several well-known silent films including "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse", "The Sheik", "Blood and Sand", "The Eagle", and "The Son of the Sheik."
He was an early pop icon, and a sex symbol of the 1920s, who was known in Hollywood as the Latin Lover (a title invented for him by Hollywood moguls), The Great Lover, or simply Valentino. His premature death at the age of 31 caused mass hysteria among his fans and further propelled his status as a cultural film icon.
Vilma Banky (born Vilma Koncsics, 1901-1991) was a Hungarian-American silent film actress. Although her acting career began in Budapest, and she later worked in France, Austria, and Germany, Banky was best known for her roles in the American films "The Eagle" and "The Son of the Sheik" with Rudolph Valentino, and for several romantic films with Ronald Colman.
