Description
This terracotta sculpture, measuring 6 cm by 4 cm (approximately 2.36 inches by 1.57 inches), is an exquisite representation of ancient Cypriot art, depicting a creature facing sideways, and dates back to the Cypro-Archaic period, between 700 and 600 BC. The piece is indicative of the zoomorphic art that flourished on the island, often embodying animals or mythical creatures in terracotta as part of religious or ceremonial life.
Provenance information substantiates the artifact's journey through time. Originally part of a larger set of votive offerings discovered in a temple precinct on Cyprus, it entered the private market in the 1960s, where it was acquired by collector H.G. in Nicosia. It has been in the distinguished collection of Dr. P.F. in Zurich since the early 1980s.
