7 Chinese Ming Pottery Offering Table Setting & Chairs
7 Chinese Ming Pottery Offering Table Setting & Chairs
Item Details
Description
East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A wonderful ensemble of 7 pottery funerary offerings comprised of a table, 2 chairs, a wash basin, and 3 plates of food, all adorned in lustrous sancai glaze. Note the remarkable detail in the drapery of the tablecloth, the intricacy of the openwork washbasin, and the architectural presentation of the chairs. Elite Ming tombs, as had been the Chinese tradition for millennia, included recreations of domestic items in order to aid the deceased in the afterlife. Each of these items has been glazed using the sancai technique, producing a shimmering celadon green color for the bowls that has attained a silvery patina. The food depicted is exotic and represent some ancient delicious dishes. Emperor Chu Yuan-Chang, founder of the Ming Dynasty, ordered ritual foods to be prepared every day in his court to honor his ancestors, so eating specially prepared meals had religious as well as practical purposes. Size of largest (table): 2.8" L x 4.3" W x 5.3" H (7.1 cm x 10.9 cm x 13.5 cm)

Provenance: private Hong Kong collection, acquired from the N. Parrot collection, Hong Kong, in 1986

Condition
Wash basin has been professionally repaired with break lines just barely visible in areas. Some chipping to bases of chairs and all have some light nicks and abrasions commensurate with age.
