Description
Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A mold-formed faience amulet of Tawaret (also Taweret, Thoueris, Tauret, Apet, Opet), the goddess of child birthing and suckling as well as protector of women, children, and the weak. Covered in turquoise-hued glaze, the amalgam deity presents in a striding pose with left leg extended atop an integral rectangular plinth, her arms held tightly against her sides, and her exposed breasts draped down the front of her chest. Her hippopotamus-form head features a lengthy snout with flared nostrils, petite eyes, and a slender neckline framed by the lappets of her wig. Size: 0.67" L x 0.38" W x 1.46" H (1.7 cm x 1 cm x 3.7 cm); 2.91" H (7.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Exhibited at the Drexel Museum, Philadelphia, 1895 to 1914; with the Drexel Institute Collection, Minneapolis Museum of Art, 1915 to 1958, ref. no. 16.74; at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) from 1986 to 1991; in the University of Arizona Museum of Art, October 1993 to December 1993; and in the Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art (RAFFMA), California State University, San Bernardino from 1998 to 2023, reference number EL01.006.1998.

Condition
Small chips along some surfaces, with softening to some finer details, and light fading to glaze pigment, otherwise in excellent condition. Great figural form. Amulet adhered to display stand and cannot be removed.
