Description
Costume design for Les Ballet Roland Petit's 1961 performance, La Chaloupée, inscribed to Fernando Sanchez for the New Year. Circa 1961. Signed "Yves" in lower right and inscribed, "Pour Fernando, 1ere Janvier, 1962." Watercolor, pastel, and pencil on paper. 19 ¼ x 25 inches. Framed.
In Roland Petit's ballet, La Chaloupée, a girl in a carriage stops to look at a wedding dress in a shop window. She puts on the gown, and then the wedding party is held at Maxim's, where everyone dances a version of the ballet's namesake, the Chaloupée Waltz. Roland Petit asked Yves Saint Laurent to design the costumes for the production, which premiered at the Opera of Copenhagen on February 15th, 1961. This drawing was inscribed to Yves' close friend Fernando Sanchez and was gifted to him on New Year's Day in 1962.
Provenance: Gift of Yves Saint Laurent to Fernando Sanchez (1935-2006), thence by descent to the current owner.
