Description
Cy Twombly (1928-2011) Title: Untitled, Medium: Mixed Media (Collage) on Canvas Board, Date: 1975, Size: 20" H x 16" W (in). In our opinion, the work that appears and is referred to in this description is a work attributed to the artist named here. This lot is accompanied by a Certificate of Attribution and is not a reproduction, it is a unique piece. We recommend that the buyer do their research before bidding on the lot. The sale of this lot is final. Was an American artist of the Post-Abstract Expressionist generation. His iconic large-scale paintings and prints of looping, gestural marks were scribbled and smeared on raw canvas or linen, infusing his work with a unique level of frenetic energy that remains unmatched. Twombly s practice balanced his interest in Roman and Greek mythology with the childlike doodling of unsophisticated graffiti, blackboard chalk drawings, and bathroom tagging. My line is childlike but not childish," he once said. Born Edwin Parker Twombly Jr. on April 25, 1928 in Lexington, VA, he went on to attend the Art Students League of New York where he met Robert Rauschenberg, who recommended he enroll at the Black Mountain College. While there, Twombly studied with Franz Kline and Robert Motherwell and was introduced to the work of Paul Klee, whose playful approach would remain a lasting influence. Today, Twombly s work can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Courtauld Institute in London, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which in 1989 devoted an entire room to his 10-painting suite, Fifty Days at Iliam, based on Alexander Pope s translation of the Iliad. Twombly died on July 5, 2011 in Rome, Italy, and is survived by his son, the sculptor Alessandro Twombly.
