His iconic large-scale paintings and prints of looping, gestural marks were scribbled and smeared on raw canvas or linen, infusing his work with a unique level of frenetic energy that remains unmatched. Twombly s practice balanced his interest in Roman and Greek mythology with the childlike doodling of unsophisticated graffiti, blackboard chalk drawings, and bathroom tagging. Born Edwin Parker Twombly Jr. on April 25, 1928 in Lexington, VA, he went on to attend the Art Students League of New York where he met Robert Rauschenberg, who recommended he enroll at the Black Mountain College.
