Description
10x12x4, signed. very tiny chip to left ear. tiny tiny. North Carolina's only documented African American folk potter. Recently published in last months edition of Voices written by Margrett Allen. Ellen Martin was daughter of Carrie Graves who is a prominent self taught artist. Ellen died at the age of 44. She sold mainly to the same collectors and dealers through out her pottery making life and set up at a few folk festivals with her wares. Her pieces produced number into the high hundreds maybe pushing into the 1000 mark - but that's it. Most active folk potters will produce 10,000 plus pieces in a 20 year time, firing 200 to 300 every kiln load. Not Ellen as her life was cut short. While we do gather a few for every folk art event we have (4x each year) they are very scarce.
