Description
A Carved wooden female idol with serene downcast heavy eye lids and hands in front of abdomen in a traditional pose. According to the literature it was believed that only the image of a woman’s body could be strong enough to contain a powerful spirit. Luba religious statuary was conceived as temporary vessel for a spirit, and for this reason sculptures very often incorporate images of females as a way to entice the spirit to reside in the sculpture. This is a very finely carved older example, the base and feet have eroded away long ago. The sculpture was professionally mounted by an earlier collector. Measures 16.5 inches tall ( 19.75 inches on professional base). Provenance: Ex Robert Banks collection, MD, USA.
