Description: 12 autograph letters signed, from various persons, several from George H. Mackay. The letters total approx. 36 pages in all. In addition, there are 6 supplementary documents including detailed invoices, etc. Fascinating and significant source material on the trade between India and the United States during the Civil War, with discussion of the voyages and trading activities of the firm‘s merchant ship “Art Union“ and other vessels. Includes detailed commentary on commodity prices and demand, advantages of trading as a neutral vessel vs. a U.S. flagged vessel, effects of the war on shipping, etc. The firm imported tobacco, ginger, rice, dyes, fabrics, linseed oil, saltpeter, and many other commodities. One indication of the effects of the American Civil War on the commerce is a comment on the famed Confederate commerce raider “Alabama“: “P.S. No news of ‘Alabama‘ some people think she has gone down. The last ship she burnt was the ‘Emma Jane“ off Cochin.“ Since the letter was written on May 5, 1864, and the Alabama is recorded as having sunk June 19th, 1864, news of her demise was premature.
