AN ATTIC RED-FIGURE LEKYTHOS ATTRIBUTED TO THE MEIDIAS PAINTER
Attic / 420–400 B.C. / Clay / H = 14 cm (5 33/64 in)
Red figural lekythos on a moulded ring foot. Attributed to the Meidias Painter. On the front, red-figure decoration consisting of Eros standing in front of an enthroned goddess with another female person on either side. Details, such as the body of Eros, rendered in opaque paint. Tongue pattern on neck, myrtle wreath with raised berries on shoulder. Below the handle an elaborate palmette complex with raised knobs in the heart of each palmette. On the reserve base an old inv. no. in pencil “184/500”.
Intact, somewhat abraded.
Swiss priv. coll. Geneva, built up in the 70s. Thereafter Swiss Coll. M. T., Basel-Landschaft.
