Binders with approximately 460 antique postcards of Japan from the early 20th century. Among the subjects are the Japanese Imperial court, women in traditional dress, historical events related to the Russo-Japanese War 1904-05, traditional occupations (rice farming, silkworm cultivation, textile weaving, fishing), temple architecture, monks, religious processions, rickshaws, picturesque countryside scenes and seacoasts, waterfalls, views of the crater at the summit of Mount Fuji, the Great Kanto Earthquake in Tokyo 1923, commercial town centers, kabuki theater, and traditional clothing and activities of the indigenous Ainu people of Hokkaido. Post size W15 cm(6 in.) x D 10 cm(4 in.).Provenance: Property of Bruce Elliot Tapper Ph.D., a social anthropologist, journalist, writer, and editor. He was an editor at the Smithsonian Associates Program in the early 1980s and then had a career as an editor at the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art, the American Occupational Therapy Association, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
