Tibetan amulet cases, gau (gawu), used to hold votive figurines to protect the wearer from misfortune and evil. They are decorated with auspicious Buddhist symbols. Brass, early 20th century., H 8.6 cm (3.4 in.) x W 5.6 cm (2.2 in.) x2. Provenance: Property of Bruce Elliot Tapper Ph.D., a social anthropologist, journalist, writer, and editor. He was an editor at the Smithsonian Associates Program in the early 1980s and then had a career as an editor at the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art, the American Occupational Therapy Association, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
