Item Details

Description

Scarce history of this Mississippi county, once the domain of the Choctaw peoples. That a history exists at all is a marvel—fires destroyed two Oktibbeha County courthouses, which consumed many books and historic papers. All the police records prior to 1863 were destroyed, as were most official proceedings concerning tax levies, roads and bridges, general business and such. An extensive sketch was written in 1876, but it was lost to history. Judge Thomas Battle Carroll, member of the Oktibbeha County bar for nearly fifty years, was uniquely qualified to fill in the historical record, which he did in this book. “Historical Sketches of Oktibbeha County (Mississippi)” by Thomas Battle Carroll. Published 1931 by The Dixie Press (first edition). A sound book with no major condition issues. 6 x 8.75 263 pp.
