Provenance: Frost Art Gallery.

This is an authentic plate from the 1947 New Yorker, the only authorized cooperative issue of Salvador Dali's "An Appearance of Delicacy" from his Silk Stoking series. There are no authorized reprints of these series [1]. The Certification of Authenticity by Frost Art Gallery is included.

In the late 1940s the number of art magazine subscribers remained low, jumping drastically in the mid-1950s. For example, in 1941 the circulation of the Art News in America did not exceed 250 copies with only 199 subscribers [2]. Due to the fact that such periodicals were not considered collectibles, the number of preserved original Dali's "Silk Stockings" would barely exceed one hundred.

[1] -- The catalog raisonne differentiate between Dali's genuine, authentic and questionable [non-authentic] graphic works. They are grouped into original and cooperative prints. The original prints defined as those created by Salvador Dali himself and cooperative prints as those supervised and approved by Dali.

The Silk Stocking series was created by Salvador Dali between 1944 and 1947, as a series of exclusive illustrations for Bryans Hosiery. Bryans chose Dali hoping to impress consumers with Dali's name and hoping that he would create a shocking campaign. Bryans advertising with Dali's "Silk Stockings" artworks appeared only once in the single issues of "New Yorker" (June, 7, 1947) and "Art News Annuals" [1945, 1946 and 1947]: therefore they are considered a limited edition.

"Dali's mid-1940s print magazine advertisements for Bryan Hosiery are simply some of the most intricate and inventive works to ever spring from the man's wickedly wonderful mind. The stunning series of Bryan Hosiery ads Dali designed drew upon some familiar elements seen in his paintings, from soft watches to unicorns, crawling ants to towering crutches, equestrian scenes to butterflies, sky-tall cypress trees to crumbling clock towers...

But I wonder if Bryan Hosiery had any idea at the time that this remarkable series would go on to become an iconic representation of some of Dali's most masterfully done works. ... - sheer delight, to be sure!"[exerpts from: Paul Chimera Dali Historian. Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dali i Domenech, 1st Marques de Dali de Pubol (1904-1989), known as Salvador Dali, Spanish surrealist painter born in Figueres, in the Catalonia region of Spain.

Dali was a skilled draftsman, best known for the striking and bizarre images in his surrealist work. His painterly skills are often attributed to the influence of Renaissance masters. His best-known work, "The Persistence of Memory", was completed in August 1931. Dali's expansive artistic repertoire included film, sculpture, and photography, in collaboration with a range of artists in a variety of media. Dali attributed his "love of everything that is gilded and excessive, my passion for luxury and my love of oriental clothes" to an "Arab lineage", claiming that his ancestors were descended from the Moors."
