Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A massive Kamasan tapestry painting on cotton, stretched over a frame and protected in an acrylic case. Depicting a narrative story or scene from epic myths. The two registers of figures are usually viewed from left to right, and at the top center is the hero, Arjuna, with pretty women caressing his legs as he tries to meditate. This myth revolves around the "Temptation of Arjuna," the central character from the Mahabharata, who's purity was tested by temptresses, and the scene was a popular choice to remind the viewer of human weakness. Kamsan style is the most popular type of traditional Balinese painting with a characteristic two-dimensionality that was inspired by wayang puppets. Size w/ acrylic: 30.75" L x 2.5" W x 74" H (78.1 cm x 6.4 cm x 188 cm)
