Description
Oversized Pair of Neoclassical Polished Cast Brass Two Arm Sconces with Milk Glass 7” Globes. Dimensions: with shades as shown, 19" height x 19.5" width x 12" projection. These sconces were taken from the Virginia Theatre in St. Louis, MO. The theatre was built around 1910 and, like these fixtures, has Neoclassical and Beaux Arts design elements. In its heyday, the Virginia Theatre served as the neighborhood theatre for many families. Beginning in the 1950s, movie theatre attendance began to decline, the advent of television changing consumer attitudes drastically. Since its closing in 1956, the building has fallen into neglect and has failed to be restored or repurposed. However, pieces of this significant building and historical era remain in rescued artifacts, such as this pair of sconces.
