Heritage draws inspiration from ancient and modern glassblowers to create one-of-a-kind works like this example, replete with remarkable patterns and vibrant hues inspired by nature. This vessel is impressively large and very organic in form and aesthetic. Its piriform body comprised of glass displaying mottled green, red, earth tone and metallic hues is coated in a layer of rippling, water-like translucent glass. The magnificent sculptural lid adorned by a frosted glass fishlike form with oxidized blue-green copper elements above and below. What's more, undulating thick swirls of translucent glass further embellish the multi-colored glass of the lid and extend to the vessel's shoulder. Brian Heritage created this vessel at Heritage Glass Studios located in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains in a 100-year-old red brick carriage house affectionally called 'The Barn' as it was originally part of Shadow Valley Farm.

Artist's Statement: "Light passing through glass creates music of its own. That music first touched my heart when I ran across some fused art glass samples in a galler I was repainting. It called out to me, and in that instant an all-consuming passion to work in the medium of hot glass was born in my mind and soul.

Once I began living my passion with hot glass, I realized that my own movements mimicked those of the molten glass on the end of my blowpipe. The arrangement of glass, from its basic elements to the colors added, forms a melody of its own. The fluidity of motion required when working with hot glass is like a dance.

The dance is unique with each piece of glass, and it changes with each new partner. The different shapes, colors, and size determine the rhythm and intricacy of the steps. Just as a dance requires rhythm and timing to keep pace with the music, the molten glass on the end of the pipe dictates my movements. Slow or fast, my pace is determined by the needs of my glass partner. Finding a perfect balance, from the first gather to the finished piece, is the journey I seek.

Building on the knowledge and expertise of those who have gone before, it is my desire to stretch the technical and artistic aspect of glassblowing to a new level in the creative process. The most rewarding part of this journey is the joy that comes to me through the creation of each piece. When working with hot glass, I see life as a microcosm. I see complex subtleties reveal themselves as impurities are burned out of glass in the furnace.

I see strength of character revealed in glass with an honesty and integrity that hides nothing from the pure light that shines through it. The struggle and physical endurance required in creating each piece fuels my motivation toward artistic growth. Music lives in every piece. The creative process continually enlightens and inspires me. My hope is that my art will do the same for you."
